What Is Comment-to-DM on LinkedIn?
Comment-to-DM refers to moving a conversation that starts in the public comments of a social post into a private direct message. On LinkedIn it is used to continue a promising thread, answer a personal question or share something that does not belong in public, ideally after the commenter has invited it.

Comment-to-DM, explained
Comment-to-DM is the step between public engagement and a private sales or relationship conversation. Someone comments on your post, you reply in public, and if the thread shows a real need, you offer to continue in a direct message. It works when the comment invited it: a question about the commenter's own situation, a request for a resource, or a pricing question they may not want to discuss in public. It backfires when every commenter gets the same pitch in their inbox, which reads as automated and damages trust. Gartner found that most B2B buyers actively avoid suppliers who send irrelevant outreach. Some creators ask readers to comment a keyword to receive a resource by DM; that can work for genuine resources but tends to attract low-intent engagement. Whatever the approach, LinkedIn prohibits using bots to send messages, so the DM itself should be written or at least reviewed and sent by a person.
Example
A reader comments "We have the same problem with our onboarding emails, how did you fix the open rates?" The founder answers briefly in public and adds, "Happy to share the exact sequence by message if useful," then sends it when the reader says yes.
In practice
The decision of when to move into DMs is part of the larger workflow in how to turn LinkedIn content into qualified leads, and the reply side is covered in how to reply to LinkedIn comments at scale.
