What Is Social Selling?
Social selling is the practice of using social networks such as LinkedIn to find the right prospects, share useful insight, and build relationships that lead to sales conversations. It replaces cold, generic outreach with engagement grounded in what a buyer has said or shared publicly, and it relies on the seller's own professional reputation.

Social selling, explained
Social selling is a sales approach where reps and founders use their own social presence to find and engage buyers. Instead of a cold call or a mass email, the seller follows the accounts they care about, comments usefully on their posts, publishes insight of their own, and reaches out when there is a real reason to talk. LinkedIn, which popularized the term, describes social selling around four activities: establishing a professional brand, finding the right people, engaging with insights and building relationships. Done well, it shortens the distance between a buyer's public question and a relevant answer. Done badly, it turns into automated connection requests and pitch messages, which buyers ignore and LinkedIn's User Agreement prohibits when bots are involved. The practical test is simple: would the buyer recognize your message as a continuation of something they said or engaged with, rather than a template sent to everyone?
Example
A rep sees a prospect's VP of Operations comment that month-end close takes too long, replies with a short checklist that helped another customer, and sends a connection request a few days later referring to that thread.
In practice
LinkedIn reports that social selling leaders create more opportunities than peers with a lower Social Selling Index, based on an internal study it does not date. Treat that as LinkedIn's own claim rather than independent evidence. The Social Selling Index entry explains how that score is built.
For founders, social selling and founder-led content are two halves of one loop: posts create the signal, and replies and follow-up turn it into conversations. The LinkedIn content to leads guide covers the follow-up side.
