LinkedIn and founder-led content glossary
This glossary defines the terms that come up when founders and small teams use LinkedIn and X as a business channel, from how the feed ranks posts to how comments become sales conversations. Each entry opens with a short definition you can quote, then gives an example, related terms and the guide on this site that covers the topic in depth. Where an entry describes how LinkedIn works, it links to LinkedIn's own documentation.
- Brand voice model
- A brand voice model is a structured description of how a person or company writes and what they believe, used to guide human writers or AI tools. It typically combines sample posts, recurring phrases, opinions, stories, audience notes and boundaries such as words never used and claims never made.
- Comment-to-DM
- Comment-to-DM refers to moving a conversation that starts in the public comments of a social post into a private direct message. On LinkedIn it is used to continue a promising thread, answer a personal question or share something that does not belong in public, ideally after the commenter has invited it.
- Content pillar
- A content pillar is one of a small set of core themes a person or company publishes about repeatedly. Pillars keep a content plan focused, help an audience learn what to expect, and make it easier to turn one idea into many posts without drifting into unrelated topics.
- Content repurposing
- Content repurposing is the practice of taking one piece of content, such as a blog post, talk or long LinkedIn post, and adapting it into other formats or channels. Done well, each version is rewritten for its platform and audience rather than copied, so one idea reaches more people with less new work.
- Dwell time
- Dwell time is the amount of time a person spends looking at a piece of content. On LinkedIn it refers to time spent on a feed post, which LinkedIn starts measuring once at least half of the post is visible, and to time spent after clicking into the post or its link.
- Employee advocacy
- Employee advocacy is the practice of employees sharing their company's news, expertise and culture through their own social media accounts, usually LinkedIn. It extends a company's reach through people rather than brand pages, and works best when employees add their own perspective instead of reposting the same approved message.
- Engagement pod
- An engagement pod is a group of social media users who agree in advance to like, comment on or reshare each other's posts to make them look more popular and reach more people. LinkedIn's Professional Community Policies ask members not to agree with others ahead of time to like or reshare each other's content.
- Engagement rate
- Engagement rate is a social media metric that expresses interactions with a post, such as reactions, comments, shares and clicks, as a percentage of the people who saw it, usually measured by impressions. It lets you compare posts that reached audiences of different sizes on a like-for-like basis.
- Founder-led content
- Founder-led content is marketing and thought leadership a company publishes through its founder's personal voice and accounts, usually on LinkedIn or X. It draws on the founder's first-hand experience with customers, the product and the market, and aims to earn trust and start conversations rather than broadcast brand messages.
- Ghostwriting
- Ghostwriting is writing content that is published under someone else's name. On LinkedIn, it usually means a writer, an agency or an AI tool drafts posts for a founder or executive, who reviews, edits and approves them before they are published from that person's own account.
- Hook
- A hook is the opening line or two of a social media post, written to make the right reader stop scrolling and keep reading. On LinkedIn it is the text people see before they choose to expand the post, so it carries most of the work of earning attention.
- LinkedIn algorithm
- The LinkedIn algorithm refers to the set of ranking systems that decide which posts appear in each member's feed and in what order. LinkedIn says it aims to show the most relevant professional content and conversations, using signals about the member, their network, the post and how people respond to it.
- LinkedIn document post (carousel)
- A LinkedIn document post, often called a carousel, is a post that shares an uploaded document, such as a PDF or slide deck, which readers page through inside the feed. LinkedIn supports PPT, PPTX, DOC, DOCX and PDF files up to 100MB and 300 pages.
- LinkedIn Social Selling Index (SSI)
- The LinkedIn Social Selling Index (SSI) is a score from 0 to 100 that LinkedIn calculates to show how well a member establishes a professional brand, finds the right prospects, engages with insights and builds relationships on LinkedIn. Each of the four pillars is worth up to 25 points.
- Social selling
- Social selling is the practice of using social networks such as LinkedIn to find the right prospects, share useful insight, and build relationships that lead to sales conversations. It replaces cold, generic outreach with engagement grounded in what a buyer has said or shared publicly, and it relies on the seller's own professional reputation.
- Warm lead
- A warm lead is a potential customer who has already shown interest in your company, product or ideas, or who has an existing relationship with you, before any sales outreach. On LinkedIn, warm leads often reveal themselves by commenting thoughtfully, engaging repeatedly or asking questions about a problem you solve.
